Experiments Towards the Creation of a Synthetic Dramatic Actor
نویسندگان
چکیده
Text to Speech technology has been evolving for the last 30 years and is finding use in a broad range of applications. This technology is attempting to apply modern Artificial Intelligence ideas to help it more closely resemble the capabilities of human speech. The speech community has also been expressing interest in applications such a synthetic dramatic reader. This paper aims to evaluate the potential and challenges for the creation of a synthetic dramatic actor/reader with the best of breed technology developed to date. It provides a quick historical review of the evolution of text to speech (TTS) technology, through present time, with consideration of the trade offs of the various technologies. It also provides a brief tutorial of the foundations for applying a new technology that uses statistics behind average voices and HMM synthesis to create synthetic speech adapted to a specific voice. The paper also describes the results of two experiments with modern TTS technology. The first experiment illustrates the ability of adaptive filter technology to vary the prosodic features that would to be expressed by a dramatic actor. The second experiment shows the capability of average voice HMM synthesis techniques to clone a voice. The paper ends with a discussion of the possible new applications of this technology, and an evaluation of its potential for creating a synthetic actor. It ends with a discussion of planned future work.

A Practical Dramaturgy for Actors through Theatrical Production Procedures
Dramaturgy, as a creative and critical act dependent on the theoretical and practical knowledge of theater, consists of two parts with Greek roots: Drama (action) and Ourgia (work and operation). Ourgia literally means to practice, act, and in other words process a raw material. Eugenio Barba divides Dramaturgy in to three parts: Actor Dramaturgy, Director Dramaturgy and Audience Dramaturgy. Th...
متن کاملExploitation In Affect Detection In Open-Ended Improvisational Text
We report progress on adding affectdetection to a program for virtual dramatic improvisation, monitored by a human director. We have developed an affect-detection module to control an automated virtual actor and to contribute to the automation of directorial functions. The work also involves basic research into how affect is conveyed through metaphor. The project contributes to the application ...

متن کاملThe Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory
Background: Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction." The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...
متن کاملAn integrated control view of synthetic actors
This paper presents the global design of a system for synthetic actor animation. We discuss the concepts that must be part of an ideal animation system: actor creation, key framing, positional constraints, adaptive motion control, trajectory planning and task planning. A complete diagram of the components of such a system is presented together with the relations between these components. keywor...
